If you need to change root’s password you can do it like this:

1. Boot rescue CD
2. Mount / somewhere (like /mnt)
3. edit /mnt/etc/passwd by changing the entry for root to:

```auto
root::0:0:The root of all evil:/:/bin/bash
```

1. Reboot system from harddrive, now root will have no password, so just use passwd to change it to whatever you want.
